Fit, Fat, and Fabulous Says it All!

Well that pretty much sums it up. My name is Samantha, I’m 28 years old, grew up in Jersey (I know what you’re probably thinking, another blog about juice-heads, tanning and the shore… not this one!), currently live in Queens, NY, am 110 days (yes, that many exactly) away from getting married and I have a daily struggle between being fit, being fat and being fabulous!

I know I am not the only one who dreams of looking like IFBB pro bikini/fitness models, enjoys eating pints of ice cream and countless candy bars but all in all is just a fabulous person. I know what you are probably thinking… Who is this B*$%S think she is? Well I’ll tell you.

I grew up as a middle child, in Bergen County New Jersey, now, I will probably never move back to Jersey, but I will say it was a great place to grow up. Fantastic school districts, great competitve sports (no, im not talking professional) and such a great sense of community. My mom raised myself, brother and sister as a single parent, who worked not 1 but 2 and 3 jobs to provide for us. Nutrition was not always the focus of our meals, but we also absolutely NEVER went hungry. My mom did all that she could to provide for us, and she did a great job (Love you Mom!).

As a kid, I was fit! Average weight, much taller than all the other kids in my class, and as “tom-boy” as ever. Soccer, Track, Basketball and a little bit of Cheerleading were my life. I never worried about what I ate, even though my father’s side of the family was overweight, I had no reason to, or I thought. Ill never forget when I got to High School. I went to an all girl’s private school in Washington Township, NJ – IHA (Go Blue Eagles!). It was such a great experience and really helped me develop into such a “fabulous” woman. I went to try out for the Basketball team, our school had such a prestigious squad that I wanted to be a part of. I went to hear what the coach had to stay about try outs, and with the words “You will have to run a mile…” i tuned everything else out. It might as well sounded like “wah wah wah wah wah” because thats how i felt. RUN?! A MILE?! ME? You’ve GOT to be kidding me. And just like that, I left, and never looked back.

Throughout my freshmen year of high school i gained 40 lbs. I was already 168 when I graduated 8th grade. I was 5’7″ at the time, but still, I was turning into a “big girl”. At the end of my freshman year I was up to the high 190s. Now… you tell a 14/15 year old girl, that size doesnt matter… go ahead, try. Being 5’7″ and almost 200 lbs was tough. Luckily, I attended an all girls high school where no one really cared, and was able to develop a pretty awesome personality if I may say so.

Fast forward now to the end of college. Forget about the Freshmen 15. I actually lost some weight my freshmen year, but just like when you lose something… I found it, and then some! By this time I had now grown into my height of 5’9″, but unfortunately I grew out of all my clothes. I graduated college tipping the scale at 247 lbs. I was a big girl, and I never really knew it. I mean, lets not be nieve, I knew I was overweight, but I had a boyfriend, I had some of the best friends in the world, life seemed good. Until I went to the doctor for a physical before entering the work force. Ill never forget what I felt like that day. It was August 2007 and I left the doctor with an order to lose weight, that my health was in danger. I was creeping up the scale and being faced with possible heart disease, on my way to diabetis and all the other heath concerns that come with being overweight.

Not for nothing, this scared the S*$! out of me. Immediately I joined Weight Watchers, and the rest is history… or is it? I was able to lose 100 lbs over the course of the next 5 years. I was presented with MANY challenges along the way, and I will always say, old habits don’t die, but the way that we react to them does. I love chocolate, and ice cream, and fast food… yes, I said it. I LOVE fast food. But, its all about finding a balance between being “Fit, Fat, and Fabulous”.

I have a new desire to focus on being fit. As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I admire those IFBB pro’s especially Amanda Latona. She is such an insirpiration and increadble woman. Could I ever look like that? Who knows… but here is where the next chapter in my journey begins!

Over the course of the next 12 weeks I will be blogging my journey to get fit. As I mentioned earlier, I am getting married in 110 days. I have gained about 20 of those 100 lbs back and am focused on being in tip top shape on the day that I said “I DO!”

Sit back, and enjoy my journey of what its like to find that balance between being Fit and Fat to acheive the ultimate goal of being “FABULOUS”, I am sure you won’t be disappointed.
